'Birds Earn Wednesday Split With Northwest University Eagles

BELLEVUE – Northwest scored 15 runs but settled for a split with British Columbia on Wednesday.

The Eagles won the first game 13-8 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.

"We're obviously disappointed we didn't get the sweep today," said NU Head Coach Pam Fink. "We've come a long way this season but we can play a lot better."

NU took a quick lead in the bottom of the first when Sydney Maurer launched a two-run home run. UBC got one of those back when Caitlyn Bradley-Tse tripled and scored on an error in the top of the second.

Northwest answered with seven runs in the home half of the second, including a two-run home run by Jamelah Lewis, an RBI single by Abby Blahut and two-run singles by Bella King and Maurer.

NU added two more in the fourth on an error and an RBI single by King.

UBC avoided the run rule in the five runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Shae Sever.

The Eagles scored twice in the fifth with an RBI single from Blahut and an RBI ground out by King.

King and Maurer had three hits each to pace NU's 15-hit attack. Lewis, Blahut and Olivia Brown added two apiece. Maurer and King had four RBIs each.

Natalie Dimitrov went the distance to get the win and improve to 6-2, collecting four strikeouts along the way.

NU scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Madisyn Leffle stole home as Kayla Stanley stole second. Stanley scored on an RBI single by Maurer.

UBU got the game-winning runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Sever and an RBI fielder's choice by Kaitlyn Eng.

King took the pitching loss despite allowing just two earned runs.

Leffle and Mauer had two hits each for NU.

The Eagles return to action this weekend, hosting the No. 13 College of Idaho in doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
