VANCOUVER –
Lindsay Bell held the host Bushnell Beacons to one earned run on just five hits in a complete game win as the UBC Thunderbirds earned a 7-2 victory in the second game of a Cascade Collegiate Conference series opening double header Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Oregon.
The T-Birds (6-3, 1-1) staked out a 3-1 lead in the first game by the middle of the sixth.
Shae Sever and
Kaitlyn Eng both had RBI doubles while a
Hanna Hansen sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth re-established a two run UBC lead.
But the Beacons (4-12, 1-4) rallied to score once in their half of the sixth and another in the seventh to force the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second, Bushnell's Bryana Yoshida hit a walk-off double to complete the comeback win in the series opener.
Shae Sever went the distance on the mound in game one allowing three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out eight.
The T-Birds were in control the whole way through in game two. Holding a 2-0 lead through four innings, UBC scored two more in the fifth on a Sever sacrifice fly, scoring
Keona Nordquist and advancing Eng to third.
Olivia Malesku was the next batter and promptly singled to third, scoring Eng.
Nordquist added an RBI single in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead and a pair of errors in the seventh allowed the 'Birds to score two more.
The Beacons got two back in the bottom of the seventh but their deficit proved too large for Bell and the T-Birds who earned the regular season opening split.
UBC and Bushnell hit the field Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT for the conference series finale followed by a non-conference affair to close out the weekend.
