KEIZER, Ore. – A pitcher's duel deadlock was finally broken in the seventh inning as the UBC Thunderbirds (14-10) outlasted the host Corban Warriors (5-15) 4-1 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Volcanoes Stadium.
Ryan Beitel pitched five scoreless innings while
Cole Alguire picked up the win in relief as the T-Birds secured the series victory, now with five wins in their last six games.
While each team managed to advance a baserunner in the first inning, both starting pitchers avoided the rainy conditions to leave the opening frame unscathed, with Corban tallying an error and the only hit to that point via a bunt single from sophomore third baseman Ryan Clay.
Corban sophomore starting pitcher Hayden Van Acker was dealing in his first start of the weekend, allowing just a handful of baserunners through the first four innings. However, Beitel was also pitching well despite the constant sprinkling/mist covering the field, as each team had managed just two hits apiece approaching the midway point of the game.
Despite the Warriors outhitting the Thunderbirds 5-2 through the first six innings, UBC was the first to strike on the scoreboard, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh on two RBI singles and an RBI double with runners on second base.
The Warriors cut the lead by a run in their next opportunity, but wouldn't manage to plate another the rest of the way.
It didn't take long for UBC to earn their second three-run lead of the game, as outfielder
Brandon Hupe tripled to deep right centre to score shortstop
Mike Fitzsimmons with ease from third base, giving the T-Birds a 4-1 lead.
A pair of relief pitchers in the form of
Vicarte Domingo and
Brendan Logan combined for the final two innings for the 'Birds, slamming the door on the Warrior offence and earning the 3-1 series win on the road.
Beitel allowed four hits while striking out seven in the no-decision. Alguire secured the win after tossing two innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Logan earned his first save of the season by entering in the ninth with a three-run lead, allowing just one hit in the frame.
The T-Birds now head into the first conference series of the season with some nice wind at their backs. The blue and gold are back on the road next weekend for a four-game set with the College of Idaho 'Yotes in Caldwell. First pitch for the series opener is 4:00 p.m. PT on Friday, March 17.
