EDMONTON – In one of the program's most dominant victories in recent memory, the UBC Thunderbirds cruised to an 88-26 win over the host MacEwan Griffins Saturday afternoon at the David Atkinson Gym.
Holding the Griffins to their lowest point total in history, the T-Birds (8-2) shot 47.9 per cent from the field and out-rebounded MacEwan (0-8) by well more than a 2:1 margin to earn a fourth straight victory heading into the December break.
UBC was led offensively by
Sara Toneguzzi's 17 points while
Mona Berlitz (16 points 11 rebounds) and Olivia Weeks (10 points and 13 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles.
Five Thunderbirds in total hit double digit points with 38 of UBC's season-high 88 points came off the bench.
Contrast the T-Birds' stellar numbers with the Griffins who shot just 20.8 per cent overall and went just 1-for-17 from beyond the arc.
The T-Birds broke open an 11-1 lead to start the first quarter and never looked back, holding a 40-13 lead at the halftime break.
UBC outscored the hosts by a whopping 21 points in the third quarter while holding the Griffins to just 13 points in both halves.
Following an impressive first semester, the T-Birds return to Canada West action Friday, January 5 when they host their cross-town rival Trinity Western Spartans for the first half of a weekend double dip at War Memorial Gym.
