'Birds win in Winnipeg, improve to 5-0

WINNIPEG - The U SPORTS No.1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (5-0) looked the part of a defending national champion Friday night, defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen (1-4) in four sets (25-11, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16) at the Duckworth Centre.

The T-Birds' defence was spectacular all evening, as the Wesmen were held to .017 attacking on the night, dropping their fourth straight match.

Winnipeg hit in the negatives in sets one and two, but rallied with an improved third set in which the Wesmen shook off a two-point deficit at 21-19 with a three-point run to take the lead. After a Lucy Borowski kill tied it at 22, the Wesmen tore off three more points to close the set.

The Thunderbirds, however, quickly regained their swagger in set four, winning the first seven points of the set to cruise to the set and match victory.
