SASKATOON, SK –
Despite a strong start on the road that saw the UBC Thunderbirds carve out a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter, the visitors were outlasted by the hometown Saskatchewan Huskies who completed the weekend sweep and remain undefeated on the season after a 77-62 victory. With the win the Huskies remain undefeated at 6-0 while the T-Birds fall to 4-2 on the Canada West campaign.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Thunderbirds started strong, taking a 11-4 lead early in the quarter, finishing the first with a 20-13 lead over the Huskies. Olivia Weekes had eight points in the quarter for the Thunderbirds.
- The Huskies found their footing early in the second, taking the lead from UBC. Logan Reider would finish off the half for the Huskies with a buzzer-beater three, making it a 40-27 game in favour of Saskatchewan.
- With a twelve point lead coming out of the half, Saskatchewan's Tea DeMong set the pace for the second half, recording 15 points and three steals, applying constant pressure on the Thunderbird's defence.
- The Huskies would lead by as much as 19 points in the third quarter, heading into the fourth with a 64-49 lead.
- Saskatchewan continued to push on offence, with a 22 point lead with just under five minutes remaining.
- With thirty seconds left, UBC's Emily Martindale would drain a three pointer and teammate Stella Lagrange would follow suit soon after, ending the game with a three at the sound of the buzzer. The offensive push came a bit too late for the Thunderbirds who are heading back to BC with the loss.
THE STATS
- Saskatchewan's Tea DeMong led the scoring with 19 points, adding four rebounds.
- Sara Toneguzzi led the Thunderbirds with 14 points.
- Ella Murphy Wiebe (SSK) and Olivia Weekes (UBC) seven rebounds each.
- Three other Huskie players scored double digits—Logan Reider with 15, Courtney Primeau with 11 and Gage Grassick with 10.
- The Thunderbirds had two significant contributors in points, with Oliva Weekes and Mona Berlitz recording 12 points.
