VICTORIA – The University of Victoria and University of British Columbia field hockey teams battled to a scoreless finish, Oct. 21 on the newly-named Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field in Victoria. The Vikes came away with the bonus point from the shootout win, 4-3.
Hannah Rumble of UBC and Anais Chace of UVic led their respective sides in net, each tallying 60 minutes of play and allowing no goals in regulation.
After a quiet opening 15 minutes of play, UBC was awarded a penalty corner opportunity in the opening minute of the second quarter. However, a stop from the Vikes cleared the ball away from the Thunderbirds to end their chance.
UBC and Victoria traded penalty corner looks in the back half of the second quarter, with both Rumble and Chace making saves for their squads to send the game into halftime scoreless.
Five minutes into the third quarter, a breakaway from Chloe Langkammer looked promising for the Vikes, but the 'Birds defenders were able to prevent her from making the cross in the circle and kept the ball out of the net.
With neither side able to find the back of the net in fourth quarter, the game went to a shootout to determine the bonus point awardee. Anni Kleinschmidt, Madeline Mittelsteadt, Antonia Diuana Hodar and Libby Hogg scored for Victoria, while
Kaia Cooper, Sanehpreet Barsa, and
Mikayla Stelling found the back of the net for the Thunderbirds. Chace stopped goals from Kaitlyn Pennefeather and
Izzy Fraser to give UVic the 4-3 shootout win.
The Vikes and Thunderbirds close the Canada West regular season tomorrow, Oct. 21 on the Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft field beginning at 11 a.m.
