BRANDON, Man. – In a terrific start to 2023, the UBC Thunderbirds completed the weekend sweep over the host Brandon Bobcats Saturday with a 77-49 victory.
Now sitting four games above .500 at the halfway point of the regular season, the T-Birds have inched closer to securing a Canada West playoff berth.
"I feel like we still have lots to work on but it was good having the challenge of us staying on top of our communication on the defensive end," said T-Birds forward
Taelor Coxford who, along with
Emily Martindale, led UBC with 12 points apiece.
Saturday saw a much better start for Brandon than the previous night, as the Bobcats managed to keep it close through the first 15 minutes. The T-Birds tightened up on defence in the second as Brandon struggled to score in the frame with UBC holding a 43-29 lead at the break.
The Bobcats' struggles on offence continued early into the third, as neither team was particularly efficient but the T-Birds managed to hang on to the lead.
UBC started the second half on a 17-5 run, extending the lead to as much as 30 late in the fourth quarter.
Four Thunderbirds hit double digits in points as
Mona Berlitz was efficient off the bench with 11 points in 11 minutes of play while
Olivia Weekes added 10 points for the blue and gold.
Brandon was led by senior guard Chelsea Miskey's team-high 10 points.
Winners of three of their last four, the T-Birds will aim to remain undefeated in the New Year when they head back on the road next weekend to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack for a double dip in Kamloops. Tip off for the first game Friday, January 13 is set for 5:30 p.m. PT.
