VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (8-6) secured their third straight victory thanks to a gutsy road performance Saturday in Kamloops.
Triston Matthews finished with a team-high 21 points (6/14 FG and 5/12 3PT) and four other 'Birds finished with double-digit points in an 89-81 victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack (6-8). Daniel Bost (6/17 FG and 5/7 3PT) topped all Wolfpack players with 21 points of his own.
Fresh off an 18-point victory a night prior,
Kevin Hanson's troops trailed 28-22 after the opening 10 minutes.
Brian Wallack had eight points for the visitors on 4/7 shooting while Daniel Bost responded with a trio of three-point shots for TRU.
UBC clawed their way back to within two points in the second quarter thanks to a 12-point effort from
Triston Matthews. The sharpshooting fifth-year guard nailed four of his six attempts from beyond the arc while
James Woods chimed in with five points of his own. Denys Bachurin led TRU with seven second quarter points as his team took a 49-47 lead into the break.
Seven different 'Birds chipped in with points in the third quarter as they took a four-point lead into the final quarter.
Sukhman Sandhu led all UBC players with six points on a pair of three-pointers.
Brian Wallack added five points for UBC while Cyrus Harrison led the Wolfpack with six points.
The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle as the two teams combined for only 32 points. 18 of those though came from UBC who clinched the eight-point victory thanks to some timely defense down the stretch. With the score 84-81 for UBC,
Triston Matthews buried his final three-pointer of the night with 32 seconds left, putting the game out of reach for TRU.
James Woods supplied eight of the 18 points in the final quarter.
The blue and gold finished the night shooting 47.8% from the field and managed 36 points in the paint. UBC's bench outscored TRU 22-15.
UBC now returns home to War Memorial Gym for their Courtside Weekend. They'll square off with the Regina Cougars on Friday night at 7:00 pm while looking to earn their fourth straight victory.
