VANCOUVER – The U SPORTS No. 2- ranked UBC Thunderbirds (3-0) showed off the depth of their roster with a 74-25 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-4) at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre. The T-Birds remain undefeated after eight different players scored tries – including two first-year 'Birds – and the team put up an impressive eight tries in the first half enroute to victory.
"That was the goal," said UBC head coach
Dean Murten when asked about the positive contributions throughout the entire roster. "We wanted to try and get some quick points on the board and give everyone a chance, because we're going to need that depth later on in the year. So, we're quite happy with the ball in hand – but we're just letting too many tries in. I'm not happy about that. We've got to fix that…but it's good to get some first years out there playing rugby so I'm happy enough. We know we've got some great individuals, but we've got to keep playing as a team."
Savannah Bauder opened the scoring in the third minute of play and added another try early in the second half to go along with seven conversions in the convincing victory. In the tenth minute,
Piper Logan offloaded to
Florence Symonds who found
Shoshanah Seumanutafa for the score between the uprights – her first of two tries on the afternoon – but Kenya Richards responded with a try for the Pronghorns at 12-5 'Birds.
Olivia Sarabura scored her first of two tries on the outside in the 20
th minute and just two minutes later Logan received a Lethbridge kick and broke free to touch down between the posts at 26-5.
Karlee Durfey got Lethbridge back on the board with her first of two tries to cut into the T-Bird lead, before first-year Thunderbird
Kendra Roberts notched her first U SPORTS try at 33-10 'Birds and rookie
Sarah Fong scored her first in the blue and gold four minutes later for a 40-10 cushion. Logan ran in her second try moments before the halftime whistle for a 54-10 advantage at the break. The Pronghorns scored three tries in the second half, but
Jordan McLeod punctuated the UBC victory with a try in the final minute of play for a 74-25 final.
The 'Birds are back in action on Sunday, October 2
nd, to host the University of Alberta Pandas (2-2) in their final home game of the regular season.
"We've got to make the last game a really good one," added Murten as UBC looks toward their home field finale after an afternoon that celebrated T-Bird alum and saw the future Thunderbird minis take to the field for a halftime scrimmage. "It's great to see the kids out, it's great to see the parents out, we've got to keep building on this. This is a huge part of what we do, and we want to keep up the engagement with the community. For the last home game of the season, we've got to put on another big show and get a lot of game time for some of the first years."
Lethbridge now has a lengthier break before closing out their regular season on Friday, October 7
th, at home against the University of Calgary Dinos.
