VANCOUVER – Sunday afternoon in Victoria, the UBC Thunderbirds (2-1-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to the Victoria Vikes (3-0-1).
Danielle McBean supplied the lone tally for the blue and gold in the seventh minute while four different goal-scorers paced the Vikes to their third victory.
One day removed from a 1-1 draw (with a 3-2 shootout UBC win), the T-Birds started strongly, pressuring Victoria and controlling the ball for a majority of the first quarter.
Danielle McBean found some open space inside the circle and converted in the seventh minute to put them ahead 1-0.
Victoria countered with two successful strikes in the second quarter. First it was Stefanie Sajko who pounced on a Julia Boraston rebound, and tied the score at 18'. Then in the 20
th minute, Erin Dawson followed up with the go-ahead goal for Victoria to make it 2-1.
Two goals and four penalty cards occurred in the third quarter. In the 39
th minute Cara Butler doubled the Victoria lead to 3-1 after a setup from Georgia Booker. Nora Struchtrup provided some insurance for Victoria at 43' to round out the scoring.
Victoria had two corner attempts in the final quarter, but were unable to capitalize, and when the final whistle sounded their 4-1 lead remained.
