VANCOUVER – Saturday afternoon at The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-1) kicked off their road double-header on the Island with a 1-1 tie with the University of Victoria Vikes (2-0-1). First-year midfielder
Riley Brown scored her first goal of the Canada West season in the 39
th minute to force a 1-1 score. UBC would then go on to take the penalty shootout 3-2.
The two teams were scoreless after the opening quarter. Victoria earned an early corner, but Cara Butler's shot attempt fell wide of the UBC goal. UBC countered with some pressure of their own in the eighth minute, but were unable to force a quality look on the Victoria net.
On to quarter two, where the Vikes took a 1-0 lead in the 21
st minute when Nora Struchtrup raced in one-on-one on the UBC goal and slid a low shot home. A minute later, Victoria nearly extended their lead but a swarm of UBC defenders prevented a quality look.
Victoria earned two additional corner attempts in the first five minutes of the third quarter but
Poonam Sandhu's club maintained their defensive resilience. That resilience would pay off in the form of
Riley Brown's goal in minute 39 which came off an initial Victoria block.
Victoria maintained a majority of the possession into the fourth period. With less than seven minutes remaining, a Victoria breakaway attempt was thwarted by the UBC defense. The best opportunity for UBC to take the lead came in the final four minutes when Victoria was assessed two penalties, but the blue and gold were unable to take advantage of the extra attackers and space.
Through 60 minutes the score remained 1-1.
