CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds opened their Canada West season on the right foot, managing to outlast the Calgary Dinos 2-0 in a spirited road tilt on Saturday morning.
The Dinos started the game strong with a great long ball, looking to start with early pressure. The Dinos were able to keep consistent pressure within the Thunderbirds end. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Calgary earned a corner where Maddy Gaffney flicked the ball on net but was denied by goal keeper
Hannah Rumble.
Second-year midfielder
Danielle McBean finally gave the game its first goal just before halftime. UBC played a ball through the Dinos middle and into the circle, where McBean backhanded the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 26th minute.
The back-and-forth match continued to play on for the second half. With numerous opportunities to capitalize on the net, the Dinos fell short. Fourth-year forward
Izzy Fraser secured the Thunderbirds lead with a strong hit from the top of the circle in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0.
Third-year goalkeeper
Hannah Rumble was solid in the 'Birds goal in collecting the shutout. Meanwhile Calgary backstop Taylor Guy had another strong performance, one of her bigger stops came when Fraser looked to add her second of the day late in the contest when the T-Bbirds were awarded a stroke, but Guy made a phenomenal save to keep the score even.
The T-Birds will look to improve to 2-0 on the young season when they meet the Dinos again Sunday morning to close out the two-game series, the rematch starts at 11:00 a.m.
