‘Birds hold Dinos scoreless in decisive victory

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0) earned their second straight victory to open the Canada West season with a dominant 41-0 win over the Calgary Dinos (1-1) on Thursday evening at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre. Piper Logan scored her first two tries this season, Olivia Sarabura racked up two tries and a conversion, Savannah Bauder earned a try and two conversions, while Rori Wood and Sadie Gluvic each notched their first tries in the win. Even more impressive was the T-Birds' defence – which was tested often in the second half by the Dinos but held strong throughout 80 minutes of play.

"I enjoyed that the score line was zero, I look after defence and I know we can score tries but last week we let in too many tries," said UBC head coach Dean Murten after his squad held the Dinos scoreless. "To come away with zero on the scoreboard makes me really happy. With the ball in hand, we knew we had to be a little more patient and they did absolutely everything we asked them to do. We worked hard this week and it showed."

Logan opened the scoring early for the 'Birds before Sarabura added to the lead with a Bauder conversion at 12-0 'Birds. UBC extended their cushion thanks to Wood and another Bauder convert midway through the first half, and Gluvic crossed the line in the 33rd minute to take the Thunderbirds into halftime up 22-0.

Julia Omokhuale opened the half with a huge run up the left wing for the Dinos as the visitors maintained pressure deep in UBC territory. The T-Birds bounced back with a second Logan try in the 49th minute that Bauder converted for a 29-0 advantage. Calgary continued to press but lost Omokhuale to injury in the 56th minute, while UBC earned multiple stops at the goal line before a 69th minute kick through to Bauder for a try at 34-0 'Birds. Shoshanah Seumanutafa offloaded to Sarabura in the 78th minute for the Thunderbirds' final score of the game that Sarabura converted for the 41-0 win at home.

UBC now has a bit of a break before hosting the Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-2) on Sunday, September 25th at 1:00 p.m. (PST), as the Dinos are right back at it on Sunday, September 18th in Victoria for the Vikes (0-1) home opener at Wallace Field.
