HELENA, Mont. – The UBC Thunderbirds opened their four game weekend series with the Carroll College Saints by splitting their opening Friday afternoon double-header, taking the first game by a final score of 3-2, and dropping the second game as the Saints got revenge with a 10-2 victory in five innings.
After a quiet start for both teams in game one, UBC struck first in the top half of the third inning on an RBI double and a two-RBI single.
Trailing by three runs, the Saints began their fight back in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first run of the day for Carroll came in the form of a
Kaitlynn Ayers bases-loaded walk that scored
Amber Brewer.
Carroll added another in the bottom of the fourth on a
Emma Hamilton single to centerfield that scored
Alyssa Lybbert, but the game turned into a stalemate after that and UBC went on to win 3-2.
The bats awakened in the second game for Carroll as
Kirsten Norris got things started in the first inning, driving in
Kenna Thomas on an RBI single. The Saints went on to push a total of four runs across the plate in the bottom of the first.
The Thunderbirds got on the board in the top of the third inning with a little rally of their own, narrowing the deficit to 3-2.
Carroll put the game out of reach in the bottom of the third inning, putting up a six-spot to take a 10-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by RBI hits from
Kirsten Norris,
Kenna Thomas, and
Emma Hamilton.
The Saints and Thunderbirds will square off again on Saturday in a double-header at Centennial Park. The first game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start time, and game two will begin at 1 p.m. Game one will be the conference rubber match and game two will go down as a non-conference game.
