T-Birds offence powers Saturday sweep

The UBC Thunderbirds closed their weekend series with the Carroll College Saints by sweeping the Saturday double-header, taking the first game 8-0 and finishing strong with a 6-2 victory.

It took until the top of the fourth inning for a run to be scored in Saturday's opening game both pitchers managed to control the game. The T-Birds then exploded for six runs in the inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The 'Birds added two additional insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Avery Hilpert tripled to right field to score Gabby Freer. Olivia Malesku then drove in the second run of the inning to give her team the 8-0 lead.

The Saints had one more chance to cut into the deficit but were unable to get to UBC's starting pitcher, as Shelby Kempel closed the game in five short innings.

After a short rest, the teams ran it back for the last game of the weekend series, which saw UBC continue their dominance at the plate. The attack was early, as Hanna Hansen launched a first-inning three-run home run to deep centre field. The long ball gave the visitors the energy and confidence needed to sweep the day, as the Saints were only able to muster a couple of runs against T-Birds starting pitcher Lindsay Bell.

Keona Nordquist and Malesku both added RBI doubles in the top of the sixth inning, showcasing their ability to knock in runs with runners in scoring position.

UBC will return to Vancouver next weekend as they host The College of Idaho Yotes for a four-game series beginning on Friday, April 15th at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
