T-Birds swept by Mountaineers in day one action

PENDLETON, Ore. – Mountaineers Softball continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a twin bill sweep of University of British Columbia to extend their win streak to eight. Eastern Oregon won by scores of 4-1 and 7-1 to improve to 14-5 overall and remains undefeated in league play at 5-0.

Game 1 – Eastern Oregon 4, British Columbia 1
How it Happened

• The Mountaineers outhit the Thunderbirds (5-7, 4-5 CCC) 9-5 in the series opener. Both teams had two errors in the contest and each hit a home run.
• For the 'Birds, their lone run of the day came in the game's first inning. A two-out homer to left field gave them the 1-0 lead.
• The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when EOU hit a solo home run to tie. Haley Ebner went opposite field with a two-out solo shot to right field, tying the contest at 1-all.
• Eastern and UBC held a 1-1 tie until the sixth when EOU went ahead for good. The 'Birds surrendered two hits and committed a pair of errors, which allowed EOU to score three runs.
• A sacrifice fly from Shelby Starr scored the first run in Karsyn Zaragoza. A throwing error on the next at bat allowed pinch runner Rhyanne Oates to score.
• A dropped fly ball by the 'Birds three batters later ultimately scored the third EOU run. Madison Stateler scored to bring the score to its final of 4-1.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
• Karsyn Zaragoza hit 2-3 and scored a run.
• Haley Ebner was 1-1, with a home run and drew a walk.
• Shelby Starr went 1-2 and had one RBI.
• Amanda Smith (6-1) pitched a complete game and had a game-high eight strikeouts.

Mia Valcke was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Emma Dorval tallied two hits in three at bats.
Shae Sever (2-1) suffered the loss in a relief effort. She had three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Game 2 – Eastern Oregon 7, British Columbia 1
How it Happened

• Similar to game one, the Mounties limited the T-Birds to just one run that once again came in the first. Both teams hit the ball well with EOU having the slight edge, 10-9.
• Defensively, both squads had two errors on the day. Helping EOU in the win was a straight flush in runs scored over the first three frames.
• EOU scored one run in the first, two runs in the second, and three runs in the third. The team's final run came in the fifth to secure the CCC series win.
• A throwing error by EOU allowed the T-Birds to score their lone run. The error ultimately scored the run as unearned.
• Eastern got the run back with another solo homer that was nearly identical to the one in the first game. Hannah Tyree delivered a two-out shot to center field to tie the game at 1-1.
• EOU's two runs in the second came on the help of a UBC error. A dropped fly ball with two outs allowed Shelby Starr and Haley Ebner to score, making it a 3-0 game.
• Eastern made it a 6-0 game in the third thanks to another home run. Karsyn Zaragoza hit a three-run shot to dead center to score her, Grace Gaither, and Kayla Berg.
• The final EOU run came in the fifth. An RBI fielder's choice from Caitlin Crist scored Allyson Bates. EOU managed to load the bases for more runs, but UBC escaped the jam.
• Leading 7-1, the Mountaineers defense held strong and kept the T-Birds from scoring. In the sixth UBC threatened, loading the bases, but reliever Abby Giles escaped the jam.

• Hannah Tyree was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
• Karsyn Zaragoza went 1-4 with a home run and had three RBI.

Olivia Malesku was 2-4 and scored a run.
• Gabby Dorval hit 2-3 in the loss.
Lindsay Bell (0-3) suffered the loss. She pitched 2.1 innings and had two strikeouts.
• Reliever Shelby Kempel pitched 3.2 innings and had three strikeouts.
