Mountaineers complete sweep of T-Birds in Oregon

PENDLETON, Ore. – The UBC Softball team fell 6-3 to the Eastern Oregon in the first half of a double header Sunday, as the Mountaineers swept the T-Birds in their three-game league play series.

EOU (16-5, 6-0) then capped off the four game sweep with an 11-4 victory over UBC (5-9, 4-5) in Sunday's non-conference game as the T-Birds drop below .500 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action in 2022 while the Mountaineers remain undefeated in league play with a sparkling 6-0 record.

While the T-Birds played a cleaner game than their hosts in Sunday's conference play finale, Eastern Oregon out-hit UBC by a 9-4 advantage, holding the 'Birds scoreless in five of seven innings.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the first to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. EOU tacked on three runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

UBC got themselves on the board in the top of the fourth when Nicole Salas hit a two-run homer.

After the Mountaineers went back ahead by four in the bottom of the fourth, Mia Valcke got one run back in the sixth, scoring on an EOU error. But the T-Birds ran out of runway as they failed to close the gap any further.

The final game of the weekend proved to be a close battle through the first five innings with Eastern Oregon holding a 5-4 lead. Emilie Sherritt opening scoring in the first with an RBI single, one of two hits in the game for the sophomore infielder.

But the game was blown wide open in the bottom half of the sixth when EOU managed a six run inning, including an Abby Giles grand slam.

Eastern Oregon held the T-Birds off the board in the seventh to secure the sweep.

The 'Birds head back north for six straight at home over the coming week, starting with a rare Wednesday doubleheader on March 16 when they play host to the Northwest University Eagles.

Bushnell University will then make their first trip to Collings Field for a pair of double dips Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19.

First pitch against NU on Wednesday is set for 1:30 p.m. PT.
