KELOWNA, BC - In their second last game of the regular season, the UBC Thunderbirds found success in the Furnace and cooled down the UBCO Heat in a decisive 97-75 road victory.Â
The T-Birds opened Saturday night with consecutive baskets from
Brian Wallack, the latter being a thunderous dunk off a dime from
Kyle Foreman. Back-and-forth play would continue throughout the first until a powerful post-move by
Sukhman Sandhu put his team up 20-11. The Heat would claw their way back into the game to finish the first quarter down by four, 20-16.
A competitive second frame fight from the Heat sent the game into halftime with UBC leading 36-30 behind 10 points from
James Woods.
UBC created additional breathing room in the third, going up by ten points to lead 50-40.
The 'Birds began to pull away in the fourth as
Grant Audu found a rim-running
Lincoln Rosebush to extend their lead to 17, in control up 75-57. Finding themselves in a big hole, a Heat gamble on defence left Woods wide open for three to stretch the lead to 23 points. With UBC in command, they cruised to a 97-75 victory behind 25 points from Woods and 17 points from Audu.
Physicality allowed the 'Birds to dominate the paint as they outscored the Heat 52-34 with 26 of those points coming in the final frame.
UBC returns to War Memorial Gym this week for a unique Wednesday, February 23rd game tipping-off at 6 p.m. (PT) against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.Â
