VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds struggled from beyond the arc en route to dropping a 77-70 road decision to the MRU Cougars Saturday evening at Kenyon Court in settling for the weekend series split. With the loss the T-Birds fall to 3-3 on the Canada West season while MRU improves to 4-2 on the campaign.
For a second straight night the T-Birds received balanced scoring but not enough overall buckets in shooting just 34 percent from the field including being let down from the three-point line where they made just four of 25 attempts for a paltry 16 percent shooting efficiency, conversley the hosts were slightly better in shooting 38 percent from the field.
Brian Wallack scored a team high 20 points for UBC and along with Sukhman Sandhu the duo just missed out on finishing the contest with double-doubles for a second consecutive night. Wallack just one rebound shy at nine total while Sandhu was in the same boat with 11 points and nine rebounds. Triston Mathews and Tobi Akinkunmi each added 10 points for the visitors.
Leading the way for the Cougars was Keivonte Watts who poured in a game high 28 points while adding six rebounds while Friday night's leading scorer Holt Tomie did register the lone double-double of the game in combining for 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Both teams get back at it next weekend for their final action prior to the extended holiday break, the Cougars visit the University of Victoria while the T-Birds host the Alberta Golden Bears next Friday December, 2 for a 7:00 p.m. PT. tip off before the rematch on Saturday December, 3 and a 6:00 p.m PT. start.
