VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-2-1) fell 4-0 to the University of Victoria Vikes (6-0-1) at Wright Field in the first of two meetings against the defending U SPORTS National Champion Vikes to cap off the Canada West regular season.
"I think UBC played very well," said UVic head coach Lynne Beecroft after the decisive road victory to successfully defend their conference title. "I think we kept them to a minimal number of shots, which was good for us…and what really worked best was we got four goals in the end. We now know that we've qualified to host Nationals after winning this game, so it means a lot. On a personal level this is my last year of coaching, so I'm going to be able to help these athletes one more time at a National Championship at UVic. We also have six players graduating, so for them it will mean a lot to host and be able to play in front of our fans."
The T-Birds held Victoria off the scoresheet in the first quarter but allowed one goal to Erin Dawson on a penalty corner in the 25
th minute to head into halftime down 1-0. The U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Vikes scored three fourth-quarter goals to solidify their fourth consecutive Canada West Championship with the 4-0 win.
UBC and UVic will take to Wright Field for a rematch on Sunday, October 23
rd, at 11:00 a.m. in the regular season finale.
