‘Birds explode for 13 tries in victory over Pandas

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-0) capped off their regular season home slate with an impressive 85-12 victory over the University of Alberta Pandas (1-4) at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre. The U SPORTS No. 2-ranked 'Birds racked up 13 tries in the win – including five from Savannah Bauder and three from Piper Logan to remain undefeated atop the conference standings.

Olivia Sarabura, Sarah Fong, Mia Bullock, Florence Symonds, and Tia Jordo also scored for the T-Birds, as the home team honoured graduating seniors Alayna Scramstad, Heather Ritchie, Kendra Roberts, Nicole Simoneau, Rori Wood, Shoshanah Seumanutafa, and Mackenzie Carson post game.

"Our defense played a lot better today," said UBC head coach Dean Murten after the Thunderbirds held Alberta off the scoresheet until the 75th minute of play. "We were patient at times. They had a lot of big, strong runners who came hard at us, so I was happy with that. All in all, I'm really happy. In the last five minutes we let them in for a couple of tries – which I'm not happy about – but they'll be more disappointed than I am. Discipline-wise, we just have to be better. We gave away something like 14 penalties and we're not going to keep getting away with that. It's still a work in progress, but this week was way better than last week."

The defending champion T-Birds have continued to build momentum throughout their four-game homestand and are looking to improve down the stretch with playoffs around the corner.

"So far it's been a great season for us," said Murten, as the 'Birds now have a bye week before heading out on the road to face the University of Victoria Vikes (3-1) on October 15th to close out the Canada West regular season. "We scored lots of tries and haven't let many in, but it starts to get serious now. We've done all the preparation, now it's about fine-tuning and moving forward one game at a time."
