T-Birds take down Dinos for series sweep

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-1-1) completed the series sweep over the University of Calgary Dinos (0-6-0) with a 3-1 win on home turf at Wright Field on Sunday afternoon.

"I think we did a better job of moving the ball," said Thunderbirds head coach Poonam Sandhu after UBC's fourth victory over the Dinos in 2022. "We said we wanted to capitalize on our chances and score more goals…which we did. We were relaxed inside the final 25 and especially in the circle, and then we spread out as well. We gave ourselves way more opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net and I think we did that well."

Riley Brown opened the scoring for the T-Birds in the 11th minute, before Alyson Denis made it 2-0 'Birds eight minutes later. Sanehpreet Basra added to UBC's lead in the third quarter, before Calgary's Madison Gaffney ended Hannah Rumble's shutout streak with a penalty shot in the fourth quarter of play.

"I think just confidence," said Sandhu when asked what the 'Birds can build off of heading into their final series of the regular season against a top team in the University of Victoria Vikes. "Confidence we can perform, confidence that we can keep the ball moving against a tough opponent. The Dinos did a good job closing down the space and marking well – we just need to work harder, move to different spaces, and get the ball on net to test the goalie and see what they can do."

The Thunderbirds will have a weekend off before closing out the Canada West regular season against the defending champion Vikes on October 22nd and 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Wright Field.
