VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (3-1-1) secured a 1-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Dinos (0-5-0) in their home opener at Wright Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the first of a back-to-back series between the two Canada West squads.
T-Bird goalkeeper
Hannah Rumble earned her third shutout of the season, all against the Dinos, while midfielder
Miranda Yee scored the game-winning goal for the 'Birds in the 10
th minute of play – her first of the 2022 campaign for the blue and gold.
"I think what we did really well was play as a unit," said UBC head coach
Poonam Sandhu following the hard-fought win. "We kept our composure the entire game, which we've been working on, and we looked for the quick transfer and ball-movement options as opposed to trying to run through everybody. I think they moved the ball well, and we utilized our opportunities and tried to capitalize on as many of them as we could."
The two teams will square off for the final time in the regular season on Sunday, October 2
nd, at 11:00 a.m. on Wright Field.
"We definitely want to finish more," said Sandhu, looking ahead to UBC's rematch against the Dinos. "I think we had a lot of opportunities to score goals, and we just need to do some fine-tuning and tweaking on skill-selection and small communication things. If we can clean that up, we'll have a lot more opportunities."
