PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds earned a convincing 93-74 road victory against the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon inside Charles Jago Sports Centre. The 'Birds relied on an efficient shooting stroke to remain unbeaten and improve to 11-0 on the Canada West regular season.
Grant Audu led the way scoring 22 points while
James Woods added 21, his seventh 20 plus point game this season. The "Birds bench came to play, outscoring the T-Wolves bench 39-9. First year Montreal native
Esaie Maurancy efficiently contributed 15 points in 15 minutes as
Jack Cruz-Dumont reached double figures with 10 points.
Spencer Ledoux led the T-Wolves scoring a career-high 18 points. A well-executed defensive game plan held sharpshooting guard Tyrell Laing to an inefficient 16 points on 4-12 shooting.
Woods got the 'Birds on the board with a deep three on their first possession of the game to take an early lead. Both teams continued to trade buckets for the majority of the first quarter. At the 1:33 mark, Audu broke down UNBC's defence and found Maurancy in the corner for a catch and shoot three. On the following play, Laing took advantage of space off a switch and buried a long three to bring the T-Wolves within one point and the home crowd to their feet. The first quarter ended with the T-Birds leading 21-18.
The 'Birds extended their second quarter lead to 39-31 following an offensive rebound by
Brian Wallack, who quickly found Woods for three at the top of the key. The resilient T-Wolves would not go away, knocking down a couple of jumpers to head into the half trailing 41-38.
Stingy defense opened up the second half as the 'Birds started to pull away following a steal and a score by Woods to go up 45-42. Piecing together great defensive possessions ignited the T-Birds offence extending their lead to 67-52 going into the fourth.
Maurancy's team leading eight fourth quarter points provided the T-Birds offence with an additional option to stretch the floor off the bench. The 'Birds posted a second consecutive 26 point quarter to secure the victory against the T-Wolves, sweeping the season series 3-0.
The 'Birds return home to War Memorial Gym next weekend when they host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack for a pair of games on Friday, January 21
