KINGSTON - The UBC Thunderbirds opened the 2021 Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship (CUMRC) with a convincing 66-0 win over the Royal Military College of Canada Paladins in the first quarter-final of day at Nixon Field in Kingston, Ont.
UBC opened the scoring with a try from
Connor Byron in the first minute and never looked back. What followed was consecutive trys from
Ethan Berry before
Evan Norris rounded out the first half scoring amounting to a comfortable 26-0 lead at the half.
The second-half saw the T-Birds get tallies from
Jacob Bourne, another from Norris,
Relmu Wilson-Valdes,
Joshua Downes,
Conor O'Flaherty and
Ryan Leskiw in the tournament opening contest.
The Thunderbirds were led by
Max Abercrombie, who finished with a game-high 16 points off eight converts.
Ethan Berry and
Evan Norris scored a game-high two tries each for UBC in the win.
Alfie Scopes was named Player of the Game for UBC. Greg Thomas was named Player of the Game for RMC.
With the win, UBC who won back-to-back CUMRC Championships in 2017 and 2018 advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 26 where they'll meet the number four seed hosts' Queen's Gaels with a 2:00 p.m. PST kickoff. Queen's advanced after defeating Concordia in Wednesday's other quarter-final 38-22 while RMC will compete in the CUMRC Consolation Semifinals on Friday, meeting Concordia.
