T-Birds fight to claim Wightman Boot this weekend

VANCOUVER – It's been a strong start to the season for the Thunderbirds, and they can make it even better with a result against UVic this Saturday, October 4th.

The Wightman Boot is on the line, and after the 'Birds defeated the Vikes 43-26 on the island two weeks ago, they have the advantage going into the second leg of the series. The boot goes to the team with the better aggregate scoreline across both matches, meaning any T-Bird win, tie or loss by 16 points or fewer will have them come out on top.

"The Vikes always pose a significant challenge for us," remarked UBC head coach Didier Banse on the upcoming matchup. "They'll be bringing their A-game and more, so our focus has to be on executing our own game plan and being mentally ready."

The Thunderbirds will also be hoping to keep their undefeated start to the year going, with a 3-0-1 record through the first month. Along with their victory over Victoria, the T-Birds have rattled off emphatic wins against Trinity Western and Capilano RFC, and tied Burnaby Lake Rugby Club.

In addition to aiming for their 12th Wightman Boot win in the last 13 seasons, a win this weekend would also clinch victory in the Coastal Cup, a three-team series between the T-Birds, Vikes and Spartans.

"We've set some clear benchmarks for every game, which has given us goals to work toward, and the team has met each one so far," added Banse. "We're finding a good balance between structured and unstructured play, which is exciting to watch – especially when it comes off."

The offence has certainly clicked through the first few weeks, with the 'Birds scoring 190 points in their first four matches and at least 30 in all of them. In the first Wightman Boot leg against UVic it was Stephen Webb who led the way with three tries and a pair of successful converts, and five other players found their name on the scoresheet as well.

The T-Birds have also been playing without a few key pieces in the lineup, which has given the chance for some younger players to step in and play bigger roles.

"Liam Turnbull has carried his strong form from the successful U-20 Canada tour and really taken the bull by the horns," said Banse. "Jacob Blackwood, in just his second year, has taken on a big responsibility starting in the front row and has done very well. Overall, the whole team has elevated their performance, which is a testament to the hard work they put in over the offseason."

The T-Birds and Vikes take to the pitch at 2:30 p.m. (PT) at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre on Saturday.
