KELOWNA, B.C. – A double-double by
Olivia Weekes helped lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 63-61 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday afternoon, splitting the weekend series after yet another nail biter finish.
The game started off close as both teams traded buckets, but UBC was able to build up an eight point buffer at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Heat outperformed the Thunderbirds scoring 14 to their seven and cutting the lead to just one at 41-40. Down the stretch, they battled to stay close but were never able to jump out front.
Kelsey Falk and Jaeli Ibbetson were cornerstones to the Heat's offence. The third years mirrored each other, both putting up 12 points and nine rebounds. The pair were felt on the defensive end as well, combining for three blocks and two steals.
The Thunderbirds were led by first-year guard Weekes who put up 21 points and 10 board, career highs in both categories. Offensive support was provided by
Hailey Counsell who added in 14 points.
Both teams are off of Canada West action next weekend due to a conference wide bye.
The T-Birds head back on the road the following week when they head north to Prince George to face the UNBC Timberwolves for a pair of contests starting Friday, November 26
