The UBC Thunderbirds earned a hard-fought 39-20 victory over the Calgary Dinos in front of T-Birds alumni, donors, UBC Mini 'Birds and more during the Alumni Game at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre. The defending Canada West champion 'Birds improve to 3-0 atop the conference standings while Calgary falls to 1-2 with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Savannah Bauder was impressive yet again for UBC with three tries and two conversions,
Piper Logan added two tries, and
Rori Wood and
Emily Baker each scored a try for the undefeated Thunderbirds. Taejah Thompson scored two tries and a conversion for the Dinos, while Callie Eagleton's try got Calgary on the board in the 5
th minute as the Dinos led 20-17 at the half.
The 'Birds took over in the second half – scoring 22 unanswered points, thanks to two Logan tries and two Bauder tries, while keeping the Dinos off the scoreboard to secure their third consecutive victory in front of a raucous home crowd.
"Calgary has a really simple game plan," said UBC head coach
Dean Murten. "They just want to kick the ball to the corners, line out, drive you, get a penalty and score from it. We just had to be better disciplined. That's all we said at halftime. We were letting them into the game because our discipline was poor, so we just had to fix that. Calgary is a strong physical team that put a lot of pressure on us, but we have a certain level of courage and commitment where we don't want to let people to score easily, and that paid off a couple of times. Savannah [Bauder] was just outstanding scoring a couple of tries on the counterattack. It was really good for the girls to have a performance like this in front of the whole community out here today."
Next up for the Thunderbirds is a tough test against the second-place Lethbridge Pronghorns on October 14
th at 4:00 p.m. (PST) at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre, while the Dinos are on the road to face the Pronghorns on October 8
th, at 5:00 p.m. (MT).
