VICTORIA –
Danielle Steer scored two goals to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 3-1 road victory over the UVic Vikes at Centennial Stadium in Victoria on Friday night. With the win the T-Birds improve to 9-1-1 on the season and strengthen their hold on both second place in the west division and overall Canada West standings with one final regular season game to play.
Meanwhile the Vikes dropped a fifth straight decision and remain above the playoff bar occupying fourth spot in the west standings, three points back of the UFV Cascades ahead of concluding the season Saturday evening.
SCORING
22nd Minute – UBC 1, UVic 0
- After Kayley Lidstone ran out to try and make the stop but missed, she was able to get back in position to make the save on the first Vanessa Tome shot attempt. However, Tome found the save deflection from her first shot and send the ball to the back of the net to open the scoring.
42nd Minute – UBC 2, UVic 0
- The Vikes defence managed to stop the UBC attack forming in the box, but in trying to clear it away, the ball bounced back to Danielle Steer at the top of the box, who in turn fired it past Lidstone for the two-goal lead.
48th Minute – UBC 2, UVic 1
- After being subbed on at the half, Erin Jensen wasted little time in making an impact, finding Trinity Kettyls in front of the goalkeeper for the Vikes' first of the game.
77th Minute – UBC 3, UVic 1
- UVic was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Thunderbirds. A low shot from Steer made it past Lidstone, restoring the Thunderbirds' two-goal lead.
NOTABLE PLAYS
- Despite VIC controlling possession for the majority of the first 10 minutes, the Vikes were unable to generate any solid scoring chances.
- UBC's Sophia Ferreira (17th Min) and Tess McRae (19th Min) saw the first legitimate scoring chances of the night, firing off wide open shots. However, both headed straight to Lidstone, who made the saves.
- VIC's Erin Jensen nearly pulled the game level in the 56th minute, pulling away from the chasing defenders to take Sarah Johns one-on-one. However, Johns was slide in front and save the ball, preserving the UBC lead.
- UBC earned corners in the 69th and 75th minutes, both cleared by the Vikes. TBirds almost had an opportunity on the one in the 75th, playing a short corner. After a couple quick passes, the Thunderbirds set up for a shot, but the Vikes were able to steal the ball away before the shot was taken.
- The Thunderbirds controlled the match for most of the final 30 minutes, but UVic saw one last chance in the 79th minute. Kyra Teetzen was able to maneuver past her defenders to give herself an open window to shoot, but Johns was there to make the save.
NOTES
- VIC's goal broke a four-game scoring drought.
- UBC finisned the night with the 15-9 shot advantage, and 11-5 edge in shots on target.
- Lidstone finished the night with eight saves, and Johns finished with four in her win.
