In their final game of the regular season, the UBC Thunderbirds will host the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday, October 23
rd at 1:00 p.m. (PST) at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre with an opportunity to finish first in the Canada West.
The T-Birds are ranked No. 5 in U SPORTS and lead the Canada West by four points over Lethbridge and five points ahead of the third place Vikes. With a win over Victoria on Saturday afternoon, the 'Birds would secure first place in the conference heading into the Final Four playoffs. UBC's offence has continued to fire on all cylinders and tops the Canada West with 197 points scored – 73 more than the second-best Vikes (124) – while Victoria has allowed the second fewest points in the conference (41).
"We're playing well as a team," said UBC head coach
Dean Murten. "We have some outstanding individuals, but everyone recognizes that the game is not won by individuals. It's a team effort and everyone is starting to trust each other more. We have a few Big Rocks that we need to tidy up on – one of them being discipline."
As defending conference champions, the 'Birds will be in tough against their provincial rivals who have won three straight matches since falling 31-15 to the 'Birds in the regular season opener on September 19
th in Victoria.
"UVic has a very strong team and play a similar style to us," said Murten. "They also have many threats that we need to contain. They have several outstanding national players that can change a game, so we need to be disciplined and be prepared for the toughest challenge of this season so far."
The Thunderbirds will celebrate their graduating seniors in front of friends and family on home field as the regular season comes to a close on Saturday afternoon. Live streaming is available on
Canada West TV.
