VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes scored two first half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at Centennial Stadium in Victoria. With the win the Vikes improved to 6-2-3 on the season good for 21 points to further cement their lock on first place in the west division and overall Canada West standings and just one game remaining in the season.
The T-Birds fell to 3-2-6 on the campaign and remain in second spot in the west with both UFV and TRU just one point back and fighting for playoff position on the final weekend of play.
SCORING
6th Minute – UVic 1, UBC 0
- Awarded the first corner kick of the game, Isaac Koch's kick in went off the crossbar, however, it remained in play and found Evan Libke, who managed to send it to the back of the net for the early Vikes lead.
35th Minute – UVic 2, UBC 0
- Playing a through ball, Koch managed to out-paced his defender, netting a tidy finish to the bottom left of the goal for the 2-0 lead.
NOTABLE PLAYS
- Bennett McKay laid out for the save in the 15th minute on a shot by Will Adams.
- The Thunderbirds saw their first promising chances in the 23rd minute on back-to-back shots from Tristan Nkoghe and Mackenzie Cole. Though Nkoghe's shot was just inches over the crossbar, UBC was able to get the ball back on the Vikes's goal kick just outside the box. Though getting the shot off, Evan Libke was able to get in front of the shot just in time and make the block.
- VIC's Ian Whibley tried to open up the scoring further in the 40th minute. Getting himself open, it appeared he was going to score on a laser shot from the left side, but the post got in the way and saved it from being a goal.
- The Thunderbirds were able to draw Harjot Nijjar out of position in the 79th minute for an open net. Taken by Connor Mrazek, the shot was on trajectory to go in, but Libke swooped in to make the save and keep UBC off the board.
- Sam Fletcher made an attempt of his own to get UBC on the board in the 80th minute, taking Nijjar one-on-one. Nijjar would win the individual battle and make the save.
- UBC saw one final chance in stoppage time. With a great cross into the box, the ball found the head of Riley Pang in front of the goal. However, Nijjar was able to make the leap for the save and secure the clean sheet.
NOTES
- Both sides finished relatively even in shots taken, with Victoria holding the slight 13-11 advantage in total shots, as well as 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
- Both goalkeepers finished with four saves on the night.
