UBC baseball splits with Benedictine-Mesa on Saturday

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds and Benedictine-Mesa (Ariz.) Redhawks split a non-conference NAIA baseball doubleheader Saturday at Mesa Community College.

The visiting T-Birds shutout the NAIA 25th-ranked Redhawks 6-0 in the opener thanks to a masterful performance from starting pitcher Jared Spearing, before the hosts earned a come-from-behind 3-2 win in seven innings to finish off the day.

GAME 1 – UBC 6, Benedictine-Mesa 0
Spearing struck out nine batters, and surrendered just four hits over 6.2 innings of work to earn the win. He improves to 1-1 this season.

From top to bottom, the UBC lineup was consistently good, providing 14 hits. Jake Lanferman, Adam Maier, Noah Or, Nolan Weger, Austen Butler and Cameron Sanderson all had two hits each, while Brett Corbeth drove in a pair of runs.

Mike Fitzsimmons scored in the top of the second inning to put UBC ahead 1-0.

Or drove in Lanferman, who led off the fifth inning with a single, to double the Thunderbirds' lead.

UBC scored twice in the eighth and ninth to seal the win. In the eighth, Butler hit a double to deep right-centre field to plate Weger before coming home himself on a Lanferman single to the shortstop.

Corbeth nailed his second home run of the season in the ninth – a two-run shot – to round out the scoring. Two of his three hits this season have been home runs.

T-Birds starter Finnigan Duffield was strong on the mound, giving up one run over five innings, while recording six strikeouts.

Fitzsimmons went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UBC.
