T-Birds drop back-and-forth battle on the road

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds fell 84-82 in Canada West men's basketball action at Fraser Valley on Saturday night.

The result snapped UBC's seven-game winning streak, and delayed head coach Kevin Hanson's ascent to the top of the Canada West coaching wins list

Hanson, by virtue of UBC's 80-63 win over the Cascades on Friday, had moved into a tie with Alberta Golden Bears legend Don Horwood with 313 career regular-season victories.

Five Thunderbirds (9-3) scored in double figures: Manroop Clair (17), Zack Moore (14), Taylor Browne (14), Jadon Cohee (13) and Grant Shephard (12). Clair and Shephard had seven rebounds each to lead UBC. Browne went 4-for-8 from long distance, and also recorded a pair of steals.

"We didn't shoot the ball as well tonight as we did last night," said Hanson. "A bit of ugly basketball in both games being the first weekend back with only a few days of preparation, for both teams. A lot of our turnovers led to points for UFV. They were a little hungrier than us, I thought. A few of our guys got a bit tired and some of their bench guys came in and made plays, and I thought that was a big difference. If we're not focused defensively and we're not focused on defensive rebounding, it makes for tough nights for us. Certainly a lot of things we need to improve on moving forward."

Vick Toor scored a game-high 19 points and Daniel Adediran had a huge double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Cascades (4-6).

The U SPORTS No. 10-ranked Thunderbirds were the sharper team in the early going, building a 17-9 lead after Jonah Morrison sunk a jumper in the paint. The visitors stretched the lead to 13 points (29-16) early in the second quarter on a Brian Wallack jump shot.

The Cascades answered with an 18-7 surge, highlighted by a pair of Jaskarn Bajwa triples, and took a 39-38 edge with just over a minute left in the half. However, jumpers by Clair and Cohee in the final minute allowed the visitors to take a 42-39 advantage into the break.

Adediran ignited the UFV squad in the third quarter, reeling off seven straight points early in the frame – a dunk, a jumper, and a triple – as the hosts led by as many as five. But UBC hung tough, and it was 61-61 heading to the fourth.

A Sukhjot Bains trey with 2:43 left put the Cascades up 78-74, but UBC's Moore responded with a triple of his own on the next possession. UFV nursed a slender lead down the stretch, and were up 83-81 after Toor made one of two at the free throw line with 15 seconds remaining.

Cohee drew a shooting foul with 10 seconds left on the clock, and made one of his two attempts, as did Sukhjot Bains at the other end of the floor to set up a tense final possession.

UBC's Clair got loose for a three-point attempt that clanged off the rim, Moore tracked down the rebound and launched a fadeaway that missed, Shephard's tip bounced out, and the Cascades finally tipped the ball out of harm's way as time expired.

Parm Bains chipped in with 15 points and six assists for the Cascades, and Bajwa had a perfect shooting night, going 4-for-4 from the field (including a trio of treys) for 11 points. Matt Cooley added eight points and seven boards, as UFV earned a 45-37 edge in the rebounding department.

UBC shot 40.5 per cent, connecting on 30 of 74 attempts.

The Thunderbirds host the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend, with 7 p.m. games Thursday and Saturday at War Memorial Gymnasium.
