VANCOUVER – Former UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball standout
Conor Morgan has received another call to represent the red and white on the international stage. Morgan has been named to Canada's Senior Men's national team's 12-man roster ahead of the upcoming 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.
This is Morgan's third selection to the national team, having played twice for Canada late last year in games against Venezuela (Nov. 30) and Brazil (Dec. 3). Morgan helped Canada to a 94-67 win over Brazil that clinched a berth to the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The Victoria, B.C. native who played for UBC from 2012 to 2018, has also represented Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he won silver, and the 2017 Summer Universiade.
The versatile 6'9" forward sits third on UBC's all-time career Canada West regular season scoring list with 1,526 points. He is in his first season with Divina Seguros Joventut, a squad in the top league in Spain. Following graduation two seasons ago the three-time Canada West all-star initially signed his first professional contract with the Southland Sharks in New Zealand's NBL.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup runs from August, 31 through September, 15 and Canada is making its first appearance since the 2010 FIBA World Championship after finishing the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers with a 10-2 record to lead Group F.
"Playing for your country is one of the greatest honours in sport and the players are fully committed to giving everything they have for Canada," said Nick Nurse, Head Coach, Senior Men's National Team. "I'm proud of the group of players we've selected to represent Canada at the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup."
This will be Canada's 14
th appearance at the World Cup. The country's highest placement in the tournament was back-to-back sixth place finishes in 1978 and 1982.
Canada is in Group H for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and will face Australia (September 1, 3:30 AM ET), Lithuania (September 3, 7:30 AM ET) and Senegal (September 5, 3:30 AM ET) in the First Round.

The 2019 FIBA World Cup will be the biggest edition of FIBA's flagship event with a record 32 participating teams playing 92 games over 16 days.
For the first time, the FIBA Basketball World Cup will qualify seven teams directly for the following year's Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Canada must finish either first or second in the Americas zone to earn a direct berth.
