LEWISTON, Idaho – The UBC Thunderbirds lost 6-5 Saturday in Lewiston, Idaho to the host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) Warriors in an NAIA West Grouping matchup.
UBC (18-14, 13-6 NAIA West) jumped out to a 5-0 lead but Lewis-Clark State (23-11-1, 15-6 NAIA W.) rallied for their third win of the series.
With the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, a Thomas Lampkin Jr. double to left got the ball rolling for LCSC before walks to Darren Trainor and Kody Garvin loaded the bases. Riley Way stepped to the plate and launched a sacrifice fly to left to give the Warriors their 11th-straight conference win.
Â
Jordan Dray opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-out double to plate
Noah Or, who got on base with a double of his own.
With Dray on second,
Ty Penner stepped up to the plate, and drilled his second home run of the season – to right center field – to put UBC up 3-0.
Nolan Weger drew a walk to open the top of the fifth, and was moved to second when
Zach Prisciak was hit by a pitch, and replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Wyatt Schorr.
Both Weger and Schorr touched home plate when
Jaxon Valcke doubled to left center to push the Thunderbirds ahead by five runs. The hit forced a LC State pitching change. Penner later earned an intentional walk to load the bases with two outs, but reliever Matt Becker induced a groundout to end the threat.
The hosts drew even in the sixth on three hits and a pair of UBC errors.
The Warriors opened the inning with two doubles and two walks to close their deficit to 5-1. They added two more runs on the ensuing single to center, which was compounded by a fielding error.
A wild pitch and a throwing error later in the inning allowed two runs to come home, levelling the score at 5-5.
The two teams will finish off their four-game series Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
