Barry Caine's masterpiece lifts UBC to 2-0 win

KEIZER, Ore. – A brilliant performance by Barry Caine propelled the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team to a 2-0 win over the Corban (Ore.) Warriors on a cold and wet afternoon at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore.

Caine, who was making his first start of the season for the Thunderbirds, was absolutely dominant in the victory, throwing 6.1 shutout innings and holding the Warriors hitless until the seventh. The Douglas College transfer from Surrey, B.C., struck out six batters and lowered his earned-run average to 2.41.

Zackary Simon, who got the nod on the hill for Corban, was exceptional in his own right, striking out six and allowing just three hits in 6.1 innings of one-run ball.

The only run he allowed came in the fourth, when Noah Or – who had doubled to lead off the inning – came home to score on a fielder's choice. Brandon Hupe collected the RBI, dribbling a soft ground ball to third base with the infield drawn in. Corban third baseman Maxwell Jeffrey attempted to throw Or out at the plate on a bang-bang play, but the Thunderbird rookie was able to slide in safely around the tag of Warrior backstop Brendan Yawn.

The only other scoring came in the ninth, when Liam Vulcano came up to the plate with the bases loaded and wore a 2-2 fastball from Jacob Bowser to earn an RBI the hard way.

Corban didn't register its first hit until the seventh, when Nate Cantonwine dropped a single into the right-center gap. The Warriors ended up loading the bases with just one out in the frame, but Daniel Sereda entered in relief and recorded a pair of crucial outs to stifle the rally.

Josh Ebert collected the Warriors' only other hit on the day, slapping a single into right field in the bottom of the eighth.

Due to inclement weather, the two teams were unable to play the originally-scheduled finale of the four-game set.

The two teams will look for potential opportunities to reschedule the season's eighth and final regular-season meeting of the two teams.

UBC will host a four-game series against Oregon Tech at Tourmaline West Baseball Stadium next weekend. Friday's opener will be the first home game for the Thunderbirds since March 10.
