UBC outlasts C of I to sweep series, extend win streak to nine

CALDWELL, Idaho – The UBC Thunderbirds completed a four-game sweep of the College of Idaho Coyotes Sunday with a 7-5 triumph at Wolfe Field in Caldwell.

The hosts rallied from a seven-run deficit in the late innings, bringing the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Thunderbirds (18-11, 13-3 NAIA West) coaxed a ground out to end the contest.

UBC took advantage of four Coyote errors to build a 7-0 lead by the fifth inning.

A Zach Prisciak sacrifice fly in the second and a Jaxon Valcke RBI single in the third put the Thunderbirds up 2-0. Then Brett Corbeth came home on an outfield error in the fourth after Liam Vulcano doubled down the left field line.

The T-Birds plated four runs in the fifth, with Valcke doubling down the left field line to score Ty Penner, who opened the inning with a single and then advanced to second on Jordan Dray's ensuing single.

Later in the inning, Nolan Weger hit an RBI single to right to give UBC a 5-0 edge. The next hitter Wyatt Schnorr drove a ball into left field for the T-Birds' sixth run. Prisciak capped off the inning with an RBI groundout to increase his team's lead to seven.

The Yotes (13-22, 7-9) got on the board in the sixth as Matthew Clay doubled and scored on an Austin Van Horne ground out and made things interesting in the eighth. Weston Miller cut the margin to 7-2 with an RBI single before Caden Jensen cleared the bases with a double off the left field wall to pull the C of I within two runs.

In the ninth, Keaton Elledge led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Jake Bowman reached on an error before Miller, representing the winning run, grounded out to second to end the contest.

James Bradwell allowed just two hits and struck out eight to earn the win, with Patrick van den Brink getting the final three outs for the save.

Jensen went 2-for-2 off the bench for the Yotes, with reliever Nathan Pena working a season-high four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief, striking out four.

Penner was 3-for-5 for the Thunderbirds, while Prisciak and Valcke each drove in two runs.

It is the first series sweep for UBC at C of I since Feb. 27-28, 2011.

The T-Birds are back on the road next weekend, with a four-game set at Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho.
