Shania Remandaban, UBC women’s golf earn historic first Canada West wins

VANCOUVER – Shania Remandaban led the UBC Thunderbirds to the women's golf title at the inaugural Canada West golf championships at Kelowna's Okanagan Golf Club.

She'll also be able to say she was the first individual to capture the conference women's gold medal in the sport.

Remandaban, a third-year golfer from Coquitlam, B.C., roared back to take the women's individual crown and guided her squad to the win.

"It's super cool. When I'm older, I'll be like: I did that first."

Remandaban started the second and final round tied for seventh after an opening-round 78, but she conquered the Bear Course on Sunday with a 2-under-par 70 to earn a three-stroke triumph over Victoria Tse of the Calgary Dinos, UBC's Kate Johnston and Rhiannon Jones of the Victoria Vikes. Remandaban was the only golfer under par Sunday on the 5,742-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course.

"I didn't actually count for the team score on the first day, so I was like, let's pull together a number that'll help the team win this thing," Remandaban said. "And I did it, so that was really nice."

Remandaban birdied four of her last 10 holes Sunday to capture the inaugural Canada West title.

The Thunderbirds took a 10-stroke lead from Day 1 in the team competition and made a 13-stroke win over the Victoria Vikes. UBC posted a two-round total of 17-over-par 449 (225-224).

The depth of the Chris MacDonald and Keri Moffat-coached program was on full display this weekend in Kelowna, as all five UBC golfers finished in the top half of the field.

Johnston tied for second at 7-over 151 (74-77). Cecile Kwon and Esther Lee, both of Maple Ridge, B.C., tied for fifth, with a score of 9-over 153. Kwon had rounds of 76 and 77, while Lee signed for results of 75 and 78.

Rookie Jue Wen from Toronto rounded out the UBC contingent at 16-over 160, which tied her for 13th place.

With the win, the Thunderbirds have qualified for the Golf Canada Canadian University/College Championship May 26-29, 2020 at a location in Quebec to be determined.

UBC has won the Golf Canada women's title the past four years.
