LÉVIS, Que. – After shooting +3 as a team in the first round of action at Club de Golf La Tempête, the UBC men's squad caught fire on day two, shooting a blistering -14 to shoot up to second place in the overall standings.
Manpreet Lalh led the way with a day two score of 65 (-7), the lowest-single round tally of any player so far this week.
Aneesh Kaura (-3),
Jake Houston (-2) and
Aneesh Kaura (-2) all also finished under par for the day, with that quartet combining to shoot a combined 22 birdies across their 72 holes.
Despite their phenomenal day, the 'Birds remain six strokes back of the lead due to UBC Okanagan also shooting a -14 for their team score on the day. The Heat's Oakley Mayner currently sits in the top spot on the individual leaderboard at -9 through two rounds, one stroke ahead of Montreal's Anthony Jomphe (-8) and two ahead of Lalh (-7) in third.
The women's half of the event suffered from a rain delay, but despite that the T-Birds remained remarkably consistent – shooting a cool even par as a team after a +1 on the first day to remain on top of the standings.
With third-place Laval scoring a +12 and now 30 strokes back following Wednesday's action, the battle for national glory is shaping up to be a two-team race between the Thunderbirds and the Heat, who also shot even par for the day to keep pace with the T-Birds, albeit still nine strokes behind the reigning champions.
Katherine Hao is now in first place on the individual leaderboard following a team-low 71 (-1) on day two, and is the only player to not have an over-par score in either of the first two rounds. UBC Okanagan's Julia Alexander-Carew has moved up to second, two strokes back of Hao through the first half of the tournament (+1).
Keira Hou (+2) is now third, while
Jessica Ng (+3) and
Sienna Harder (+6) have moved up to tied for fourth and solo 10th, respectively.
The action continues tomorrow morning in Quebec, with two more rounds to go before the national champions are crowned.
