VANCOUVER – It was a game of two very different halves for the UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-3), jumping out to a two goal lead in the opening half against the Calgary Dinos (0-2-2) only to relinquish that lead in the following half while settling for a 2-2 draw Saturday at Wright Field.
"We spent a lot of time working on our attacking plays, and we had two corners in the first half and we executed both well, which was really good," said UBC head coach
Poonam Sandhu of her team's two goals today.
The visiting Dinos dominated the opening ten minutes of the match. Just over a minute in, they were rewarded with a corner but unfortunately for them they were unable to convert. The Dinos were rewarded another corner shortly after and were able to get a great shot off but it was deflected wide by a UBC defender.
Neither team was able to muster any great chances until after the quarter break. With six minutes remaining in the opening half, UBC was able to find the back of the net due to a great shot from third year defender
Sara Goodman.
The girls in blue kept up with the pressure and just three minutes later, they were rewarded with another corner and a terrific shot by Goodman was deflected in by first year midfielder
Sanehpreet Basra.
The 'Birds tried to add one more before the half and got a great shot away but it was turned aside on a great save by Dinos goalie Tayler Guy.
In the second half, the Dinos wasted no time evening up the game. They scored a goal just a minute in and added their second a few minutes later.
Fifth year forward Jenna Bower was awarded a penalty stroke and made no mistake, putting it past
Ava Aminbakhsh who came in as a second half substitute for
Hannah Rumble.
Bower wasn't done there as six minutes later she netted her second of the match after a mad scramble in front of the 'Birds' net.
The quarter break came, and it seemed to stifle the Dinos' momentum. The 'Birds dominated the final frame, but it was the strong play of Guy who kept her team in the match.
"We need to make sure we are committing to our game plan, getting our structure early and just getting the intensity up," added Sandhu.
Both teams are back in action Sunday at Wright Field for UBC's final home game of the season with an 11:00 a.m. PT start.
