UBC and Calgary tie 2-2

CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team scored a pair of second-half goals to draw 2-2 with the host Calgary Dinos Sunday at Hawkins Field.

On the last day of September, that weather wise felt more like the last day of November, the Dinos earned their best result against the seven-time defending national champions since a 4-4 tie on Oct. 9, 2011.

Right from the get go, the Thunderbirds came out strong, gaining a number of good scoring chances in the first five minutes of the opening half. Izzy Fraser and Alix Vanry were dangerous all game, giving Dinos defenders all sorts of trouble.

However, the Dinos weathered the early storm, and found a way to open the scoring and get out to an early lead for the first time season. A beautiful cross found Meghan Norlander wide open right in front of net, and she made no mistake, hammering the ball home to put the home side up 1-0, a lead they would take into halftime.

UBC tied the game in the 50th minute when co-captain Emily Martin scored on a penalty corner, deflecting a ball home to tie the game at 1-1.

Calgary came up with a reply on a corner of their own to regain the lead. Janelle Rice tipped a shot from the top of the circle into the bottom right corner, giving the Dinos a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute.

Trailing late, the Thunderbirds pressed hard, causing the Dinos to take back-to-back cards in the 58th and 60th minutes, leaving them short two players. UBC took advantage, and off of another penalty corner, Thora Rae found the back of the net off of a deflection in the 60th minute.

Dinos goalkeeper Ingrid Ulrich made a number of miraculous saves throughout the game to help her team to a point in the standings. These saves included a great blocker save in the last final minutes of the second half, keeping the score deadlocked at 2-2

Halfway through the Canada West season, the Dinos now sit in third at 0-3-1, while UBC is second with a record of 1-0-3.

The Thunderbirds will travel to Victoria next weekend for a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader against the league-leading Vikes 2-0-2.
