KEIZER, Oregon – The UBC Thunderbirds (3-5, 8-13) had a one run lead in the seventh inning but saw the host Corban Warriors (4-1, 14-10) score eight in the bottom half en route to a 9-2 win in the series opener Friday night at Volcanoes Stadium.
One of the differences in the ballgame was Corban's aggressiveness on the base paths as the Warriors totaled four stolen bases and forced the Thunderbirds into a number of errors, five in total and four in the seventh alone.
The Warriors trailed for much of the contest as UBC's
Niall Windeler struck out nine Corban batters through six innings, but then Corban eventually got to him in the seventh and decisive frame. While batting around the lineup, the Warriors piled on eight runs, highlighted by key two-RBI hits from Ethan Bragg and Jarett Thoren.
Kris Jackson earned the win on the hill for Corban as he went seven innings while allowing just three hits and giving up two runs, only one of which was earned. Austin Holmes also provided two solid innings in relief, facing just six batters while not allowing a hit.
The Thunderbirds and Warriors begin a doubleheader Saturday at 11:00 a.m. PT before closing out the series Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT.
