UBC softball falls twice at Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The UBC Thunderbirds dropped both ends of a Cascade Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader at Oregon Tech Saturday, falling by scores of 5-3 and 7-4 at the OIT Softball Complex in Klamath Falls, Ore.

The T-Birds fall to 2-4 in conference play and 3-10 overall with today's results, while the host Hustlin' Owls improve to 17-5 and 7-1 in CCC play.

After an Ali Graham RBI single in the first inning, UBC's Frances Ramsay hit the team's first home run of the year in the second inning, a two-run blast that gave the T-Birds a 2-1 lead.

Oregon Tech tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning on three hits, highlighted by an Olivia Lethlean RBI single.

UBC took the lead back scoring their final run of the game in the top of the third, taking advantage of three hits and a throwing error by the Hustlin' Owls' third baseman that allowed Claire Eccles to cross home plate.

Oregon Tech grabbed the lead back for good in the bottom of the fourth, as All-American Tara Motes hit a two-run RBI double into the right field corner after two Owls' runners got on base on a pair of UBC errors. Moates later came home on a Lethlean RBI single that rounded out the scoring.

That 5-3 score would hold through the final three innings as OIT picked up the win.

Ramsay, Eccles and Shaelyn Ogilvie all had a couple of hits each to lead UBC. Zoe Gillis (1-5) pitched a complete game for the T-Birds giving up just two earned runs.

In Game 2, UBC tied the game 4-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Paige Harbord led off with a single, and then moved to third on Eccles' double to left center. Ogilvie then came up to the plate and delivered a double of her own to score Harbord. Eccles tied the game up when she touched the plate on Natasha Aisenstat's sacrifice fly.

However, Tech scored three times in the fifth, highlighted by a Rachael Delamare RBI double and a two-run home run off the bat of Sahalie Doe, her first of the year, to earn the triumph.

Harbord's triple to left center in the top of the first inning opened the scoring as Sydney Brown – who led off the game with a single – came home. Ogilvie then hit a single to score Harbord and give UBC an early 2-0 advantage.

The Hustlin' Owls replied with a run in the home half of the first, and tied the game in the third on a Doe RBI single.

Kiahna Brown broke-up that tie in the next inning with her team-leading fourth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field giving the Owls a 4-2 lead.

Eccles paced the UBC offence with three hits, while Ogilvie drove in a pair of runs. Emma Tuson (2-3) pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering seven runs.

The teams will wrap up the four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled at 11 a.m. at the OIT Softball Complex. The second contest will be a non-conference affair.
