CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-1) were able to get past a tough Calgary Dinos squad and stay undefeated in 2017 with a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
Â
The game consisted of numerous penalty corners with equal aggression from both teams.
Â
UBC's
Margaret Pham scored the winning and only goal of the game through a penalty corner within the 26th minute of the match.
Â
"I think our athletes struggled," said UBC head coach
Robin D'Abreo. "A lot of credit goes to Calgary who defended well and kept us honest with their counter attack, but we did not take advantage of the opportunity today. We were inconsistent with our possession and were poor with our execution of set plays." Â

Â
During the 50th minute of the match, a penalty shot from the T-Birds was quickly overcome in the following minute by another penalty shot from Dino attacker Sabrina Wong, which just missed the left side of the UBC goal.
Â
UBC's
Hannah Eborall exercised another powerful penalty corner during the 57th minute of the match, but the Dinos were able to sweep it away.
Â
Minutes before the end of the match, Dinos forward Danica Heath attempted a strong shot at the T-Birds' net, but the shot was blocked by the UBC defenders.
Â
"There is a lot to be learned from a game like this however and we will look to do exactly that," added D'Abreo. Â "Getting back to our process, performance and effective execution."
Â
The two teams will re-match again on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Hawkings Field.
