Season finale heroics send 'Birds to playoffs

VANCOUVER - Lindsey Ogilvie pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings and the UBC Thunderbirds (15-23, 13-13 CCC) offence varied between industrious and explosive in taking back-to-back shutout victories over the Carroll College Fighting Saints (15-21, 10-16 CCC), 3-0 and 11-0 on Sunday in Beaverton, Ore.

The wins propelled UBC into the sixth seed for next weekend's Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship where they will match-up against the No. 3 seed Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls. The 'Birds' late season surge saw them win nine of their final ten conference games and get back to a conference championship for the first time since 2015.

Game One

The game was a pitcher's duel between Ogilvie and Carroll starter Tess Eaton until the 'Birds managed to hit the score sheet in the top of the fourth. UBC catcher Lexie Brenneis, who had already pounded out 12 RBIs in her previous three games, kept her hot streak going with a double to centre field.  After Taylore Jones was brought in to pinch run for Brenneis and Lindsey Ogilvie grounded out, Montana Turnovitski slapped a single to right field, scoring Jones.

In the top of the fifth inning Frances Ramsay was able to double the UBC lead when she scored on a Carroll fielding error. The 'Birds added an insurance run in the top of the sixth and once again it was Brenneis providing the timely hit. Brenneis drilled a grounder through the left side of the Carroll infield, scoring Hillary Strelau from third base and giving UBC the 3-0 lead.

Ogilvie (5-7) pitched a masterpiece, allowing only three hits over seven innings, striking out three and walking just one.

Game Two

UBC's offence scored early and often in the game that ended after just five innings with the Thunderbirds holding a lead of more than eight runs. In the the top pf the first, a Turnovitski single cashed in Strelau and Sydney Brown. Later in the inning, a Sierra Sherritt sacrifice fly scored Ogilvie.

After scoring two runs in the top of the third and another in the top of the fourth, UBC busted the game open in the top of the fifth and punched their tickets to the playoffs in the process. A two-run double by Strelau was followed by a two-run home run by Breinnes pushing the 'Birds into an 11-0 lead.

Ogilive (6-7) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth to earn her second straight complete game, shutout victory of the day. The senior went all five innings, giving up five hits, striking out four Carroll batters and walking none.

With three stolen bases over the two games against Carroll, Strelau broke her own school record for stolen bases in a single season. She now has 25 this season, one more than the previous record of 24 she recorded last year.

UBC's first playoff game will be Friday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m. vs. Oregon Tech. The conference champions Corban Warriors will host the round-robin, double-knockout CCC Championship at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore.
