Thunderbirds swept by Warriors in Oregon

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – The UBC Thunderbirds softball team (1-7) were swept in a Saturday doubleheader against the Corban (Ore.) Warriors (12-1), falling 3-2 and 8-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference openers for both teams at Wilsonville High School in Wilsonville, Ore.

Game 1
Thunderbirds catcher Hillary Strelau opened the scoring in the first contest, making it home from third after a throw from her Corban counterpart Jessie Isham went askew, putting UBC up 1-0 in the first inning.

After the Warriors knotted it up 1-1, the 'Birds retook the lead in the fourth frame. With two on and two outs, left fielder Paige Harbord drilled a single up the middle, driving in Shaelyn Ogilvie from third.

That lead didn't last long – in the bottom of the fourth, Corban third baseman Raimee Sluder dialed up a two-run homer that put the Warriors back on top 3-2.

That also capped the game's scoring, as neither side could muster up much offence in the latter half of the contest. On the mound, Zoe Gillis went the distance for the 'Birds, pitching six innings and surrendering three earned runs on seven hits.

Game 2
Already up 4-0, the Warriors put the second contest away with a four-run fourth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Taylor Eilders popped a single to score Paige Martin.

The next batter up, Maddy Melton, drove in Ashleigh Lynch from third with another single and a couple of batters later, Melton herself crossed the plate on a passed ball.

A wild pitch from Lindsay Ogilvie gave Isham, who had worked her way to third, enough time to cross home plate a couple batters down the line.

The game ended on the mercy rule following the fifth frame, with Ogilvie's line showing four innings of work with six earned runs surrendered on eight hits. The senior also struck out two batters of the 21 she faced.

The teams will face off again on Sunday in Wilsonville, with games starting at 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. The first contest on Sunday will count in the Cascade Conference standings.
