SURREY, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds got two much needed wins Friday afternoon, by sweeping the visiting Great Falls (Montana) Argos in a doubleheader at Softball City in Surrey, BC. Propelled by some excellent starting pitching by
Zoe Gillis and
Lindsey Ogilvie and the hot hitting of
Claire Eccles and
Lexie Brenneis, the 'Birds put up 2-1 and 3-1 victories for their first conference wins of 2017.
Â
"Being at home was big for us," said UBC head coach
Gord Collings. "Being in front of our fans and the player's families gave us a lot of energy. As well, our pitchers did a great job for us. Lindsey and Zoe were outstanding today."
Â
Game One
Â
Gillis (2-6) was virtually unhittable in easily her finest outing of the season. The third year right-hander went the distance and only gave up two hits and one run in the victory.
Â
"It felt great to be able to go the whole seven innings," said Gillis. "My spins were working and I just got into a rhythm."
Â
Â
UBC got all the offence they needed in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 1-0 and with pinch runner
Ashley Jacob on second, T-Bird right fielder
Claire Eccles hammered one over the right centre fence for her first home-run of the season. The big fly proved to be the pivotal swing for the 'Birds, as Gillis got all three Argo batters to ground out in the top of the seventh.
Â
"I fouled the first two pitches right back behind home plate so I knew it was going to come," said Eccles about her game winning home run. "It felt great. There was a really good vibe today."
Â
Game Two
Â
This time it was Ogilvie (1-5) who stole the show from the Thunderbird pitching mound. The senior scattered six hits over six innings, giving up only one earned run to grab her first victory of the season.
Â
"It was really great to see it all come together today," said Ogilvie. "It's a huge morale booster to come off a long losing streak and get those two wins. I think it was almost more of a victory for the team off the field."
Â
After the Thunderbirds capitalized on two Argo errors to score an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, Brenneis delivered the game-winning blow with a home run in the bottom of the fifth. With UBC second baseman
Emily Chorpita on second base, the UBC catcher drove a pitch over the right centre fence to put the 'Birds up 3-0. Brenneis has been battling a hand injury for much of the 2017 season. If she can round into form health-wise, the transfer from the University of Montana has the ability to be a game-changer for the 'Birds. The two RBIs were her 13th and 14th of the season, tops on the T-Birds, which is remarkable since she has essentially been playing the last month with one working hand.
Â
"Overall I'm super proud of the team because I knew we could pull through it," said Brenneis. "I was just looking for contact, nothing big. Big things happen when you're just looking to do the little things."

UPDATED April 1: The Thunderbirds and Argos will play a single game on Saturday, scheduled for 2 p.m. at Softball City.
