LANGFORD, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds men's rugby team claimed Rugby Canada's National University 7's Rugby Championship title for the first time ever Saturday at Westhills Stadium in Langford, B.C., after completing a perfect six-game run.
In the Cup Final, UBC defeated the defending champion Victoria Vikes 19-5 on tries from
Andrew Coe, Sean Duke, and
Theo Sauder, as well as a pair of conversions from
Jorden Sandover-Best.
The Thunderbirds got to the final with a 29-0 shutout of Victoria's Norsemen squad. Coe, Duke, Sauder,
Elias Ergas, and
Cole Keffer all provided tries, while Sandover-Best had two conversions.
UBC began Saturday's playoff round with a 54-5 quarter-final triumph over Trent, again with veterans and youngsters contributing.
Manar Kulkhan had a couple of tries, while the T-Birds had one each from Sandover-Best, Sauder, Duke, Ergas,
Tyler Hergott, and rookie
Fraser Hurst.
In three group games on Friday, UBC outscored its opponents 178-0. The team beat Royal Military College 51-0, shut out Regina 71-0, and defeated Lethbridge 56-0.
Sandover-Best led all players in the tournament with 56 points scored. Ergas scored eight tries over the course of the event, tying for first in the championship. Hurst and Sauder both recorded seven tries for UBC.
