T-Bird bats supply extra inning magic against Warriors

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds upended the reigning champion Lewis-Clark State Idaho Warriors in extra innings on Friday night, driving in three runs in the 10th frame to claim the 6-3 win.

Knotted up at 3-3, with one out and the bases loaded, third baseman Kyle McComb dropped a two-run single to score Griffy Goyer and John Whaley. Anthony Olson provided a bit of insurance as the next batter up, with his sacrifice fly allowing Nick Spillman to cross home plate.

Christian Botnick (1-0) played the closer role for the 'Birds as his two innings of work, including that 10th stanza, saw him surrender no runs and pick up one strike out. In the bottom half of 10th, Botnick went three-up and three-down against Warriors first baseman Seaver Whalen, designated hitter J.J. Robinson, and right fielder Tyler McDowell.

After a pitching battle in the early going between starters Connor Noble and Kevin Hamann, Mitch Robinson got UBC on the board in the fifth. The third-year third baseman drilled a double to drive in Olson from second, before Vinny Martin stepped to the plate and drove in Robinson with a single.

Robinson would add another two-base shot in the seventh frame, scoring Austen Butler to put UBC up 3-0. Lewis-Clark State responded with three runs in the eighth to send the game to extra innings.

The 'Birds and Warriors continue their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, as the first pitch of the first contest will be thrown out at 2:00 p.m. (PT) tomorrow.
